Edward "Ed" Maestas Obituary

Edward “Ed” Louis Maestas, age 88, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 2, 2025. He passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri.

Ed’s journey on this earth was one marked by wit, adventure, boat rides and BBQ. His sense of humor was truly one-of-a-kind and his many pithy sayings will be remembered with a smile. He affectionately assigned nicknames to all of his acquaintances and made friends every place he frequented, from the gas station where he purchased his daily “Big Gulps” to the local animal shelter where he faithfully donated supplies. Ed deeply loved his family and delighted in family gatherings, phone calls and texting with his grandkids. He adored his two furry Jack Russell companions, Chakita and Sooki, and was notorious for feeding them steaks and taking them everywhere in his pickup truck.

Ed, or “Eddie”, as he was known growing up, was born on December 6, 1936 in Los Angeles. He spent his childhood years surrounded by a large extended family. Along with his mother Ida, there were many who played a significant role in his upbringing. His Aunt Louise, (Eloise) and Uncle Frank Gallegos, Aunt Molly and Aunt Grace, and his grandparents Louis and Ramona Maestas were especially important to him. His cousin Frances Gallegos Brown he considered a sister; they remained close over his lifetime, talking and visiting often.

Ed began his career at McDonell Douglas where he was employed for over a decade. A self-taught carpenter and contractor, Ed owned and operated a successful business, Maestas Construction, in St. Charles, Missouri. His retirement years were filled with blessings and fond memories: cross-country road trips, gardening, fishing, cooking the latest recipes, entertaining at his lake house and attending football games with loved ones.

Ed is survived by his daughter and four sons and daughters-in-law; Carolyn (Mike) Bernal Spencer, David (Cheryl) Maestas, Donald (Brenda) Maestas, Daniel (Bobbi) Maestas, Douglas (Mernie) Maestas; 18 grandkids, 22 great grandkids, his dear cousin Frances, and a host of other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Ida Maestas Simms, stepfather, Everett Sims and his brother, William Sims.

A Memorial Service will be held at The Rock Church of St. Louis (9125 Manchester Rd, St. Louis, MO 63144) on May 17 at 2:00 pm.
