Lela Ditch Obituary

Lela Joanne Ditch (nee Johnson), 89, passed away with her family by her side on Thursday, January 25, 2024. She was born on August 30, 1934, in Buckhorn, MO, and is the daughter of the late Raymond and Helen “Dorothy” (nee Bennett). We know she was greeted in heaven by her late husband of 68 years, Vernon “Wootsie” Ditch, alongside her siblings, brother Donald “Donnie” Johnson (Gus) and sister Elizabeth “Carolyn” Wieters (Robert “Bob”). As the family matriarch, her unwavering love will be cherished by her sons, Jerry (Judi) Ditch, Joey (Jane) Ditch, and daughter Jill (Rocky) Sickmann as well as the 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends whom she leaves behind.

Education was always important in her life. She loved to tell stories about the many states she attended grade school in, spanning from little Marquand Schoolhouse in Marquand MO to California. She graduated from Ritenour High School where she was named Popularity Queen – no surprise there. Always bubbly and smiling to greet everyone.

Lela Joanne has always been as sweet as the fudge sauce she was famous for. She carried many titles throughout life including wife, mother, grandma, “Auntie”, and great grandma. Her other titles are a testament to how well she took care of others: the best special education teacher ever, master quilter and knitter, hummingbird and hostess queen, fitness instructor, and our real-life fashion icon. It’s impossible not to think of her when you hear the words: heated blanket, petting eyes, frozen cherries, gardening, salami sandwiches, cheese with holes, the Botanical Gardens, and “Wootsie!”

Thanks to her, our family is blessed with memories and stories to pass on through generations. There will never be a day we forget about how lucky our family has been to have this remarkable, beautiful, loving, determined, and caring person who we got to call ours.

In lieu of flowers, Donations to Shriner’s Hospital Cancer Care St. Louis, MO and if you can attend, we ask that you wear your favorite hat to the services, as this was one of the accessories, she could never leave the house without.
