Mary Anglemyer Obituary

Mary Anglemyer (nee Bley) (1944-2020) once said: "Remember me with a smile, or not at all."

For everyone who had the pleasure to meet Mary Virginia, or the misfortune to cross her, she was far from a simple person and a smile is generally the first thing that comes to mind, followed by recollection of some colorful, over-the-top story -- occasionally even based on some kernel of truth.

Mary Virginia Bley was born on April 29, 1944 on Jefferson Avenue in Downtown St. Louis -- a lower middle class, staunchly Catholic, ethnic German neighborhood. Her simple upbringing informed her straightforward approach to life, her shameless disregard for decorum and social expectations, and her egalitarian tendencies. She discovered music at a young age, and it became a mainstay of her identity, (well, that and her need to embarrass her kids in public). Mary’s passion for music was surpassed only by her eternal faith in God and her unconditional love of her family. Mary would be raised in Jefferson County and in July 1967, would marry Ken Anglemyer, a U.S. Coast Guardsman from Phoenix.

She is survived by her daughter, Liesl (Tim) Fox of MO; three sons, Michael (Yulia) Anglemyer of VA, Kris (Kimberly) Anglemyer of CA, Andrew (Kara) Anglemyer of New Zealand; sister, Rosie Granich of MO; four brothers, William Bley of NV, John Bley, Louie Bley, and Donald Bley all of MO; five grandchildren, Johanna, Michael, Lewis, Greta Anglemyer, and Alivia Fox. She is preceded in death by her parents, William J. and Jessie V. Bley (nee Watson), brother, Charles Bley, and her cursing parrot, Ludwig.

As Mary always had a sense of “adventure”, (which was, incidentally, what she called ambulance chasing with her kids), she has just started on her most exciting adventure yet. And though Mary’s singing voice may have long faded, her light will always shine.
