Peggy Jean Carson-Schropp, age 89, died peacefully in the arms of her Savior surrounded by her beloved family on June 21, 2025 in Lake Saint Louis, MO.
Peggy is survived by her son, Bill (Holly) Carson of Lake Saint Louis, MO; two loving granddaughters; Kimberly Carson (Lorenzo) of Manhattan, NY, and Kayla Carson (Jay Schwartz) of Seattle, WA; and cherished great-grandson Stefano. Peggy leaves behind her adored siblings, Donnie (Marsha) Billman of Harrisburg, IL, Bonnie (Jack) Irwin of Marion, IL, and John Billman of O’Fallon, MO. She was preceded in death by husbands William K. Carson and Louis F. Schropp, and by children Lynn Carson and Clay Carson. A woman of uncommon grace and unwavering grit, Peggy was the heart and soul of her family and the steady hands behind a lifetime of care, laughter, and perfectly flakey apricot turnovers. Gratitude for her life and love will forever be our hearts memory.
Born in 1935 on a small farm in Eagle Creek Township and raised in rural Southern Illinois, Peggy grew up with an early affection for every creature that walked, trotted, or mooed. In 1953, her rare charm and elegance was recognized when she won first place at the “Miss Saline County” beauty pageant and reigned over the court of love in the 1954 “Miss Illinois” beauty pageant, where she won the distinguished recognition of runner up. She worked in her early 20’s as a flight attendant for Ozark Airlines during the “Golden Age of Air Travel” where she met her late husband William Carson, who was a pilot for Ozark. For many years Peggy was the head of the St. Charles Habilitation Parent’s Association where she advocated for services on behalf of her late son Clay and the developmentally disabled. She was a long standing, and perhaps the best dressed member of Dardenne Presbyterian Church. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, resilience, and perseverance, carried on by her children, her grandchildren, and the many others lucky enough to have been known by her.
Deep gratitude to all her pastoral team, SSM nursing and hospice staff, friends, neighbors, and caregivers along the way who supported Peggy on her spiritual and healing journey.
Peggy’s memorial service will be held at a later date to be determined at Dardenne Presbyterian Church. Internment will be held at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
