Raymond D. Cathey, 82, of Lake Saint Louis, Missouri, passed away on April 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Raymond was born on July 23, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri, to the late John and Margaret (Winscott) Cathey. He later moved to Ridgecrest, California. In 1960, Raymond proudly joined the United States Navy, where he served as a radio operator aboard a minesweeper. During his time in the Navy, he met the love of his life, Betty. After one blind date and a courtship through handwritten letters, they were married on April 14, 1963. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to devotion and love, lasting 58 years.
Following his military service, Raymond built a career in telecommunications, where he dedicated many years at Contel/GTE/Verizon, retiring in 1995. Raymond found his greatest joy in spending time with his family and friends. He took pride in caring for his yard and was happiest when he was doing something that brought joy to his beloved wife. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle.
Raymond is survived by his children: Scott Cathey (Joyce), Cristie Koechle (Robert), and David Cathey (Shelley); his brother, Richard Cathey (Alice); his sister, Diana Smith; and his nine grandchildren: Lauren Fleming (Darian), Ashlin Bathe (Ryan), Brittany Berendzen (Nate), Chelsea Wolters (Ben), Tylan Cathey, Jackson Wichmann, William Wichmann, Mckinna Cathey, and Emma Wichmann.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty Hilburn, and his brothers, John Cathey, Carroll Cathey, and Robert Cathey.
In lieu of flowers, Raymond would have appreciated donations in his memory to Operation Food Search or the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
