Rev. Barton Gray Obituary

Barton Carlton Gray fell asleep in Jesus on May 3, 2025. He was born to Richard and Gertrude Gray on November 19, 1941 in Battle Creek, Michigan. He was a loving husband for over 60 years to Laura (McCormick) Gray. Both he and Laura grew up in Battle Creek and married there. He was also a dear brother to Rodger (Patricia) Gray and a dear sister to the late Debora (Kevin) King.

He was a loving father to five children; Paul (Karla) Gray, Sarah (Greg) Schlicker, Timothy, John (Connie) Gray, and Joel (Jennifer) Gray; loving grandfather to Nicholas (Alex)) Schlicker, Jared Gray, Eric (Sharon) Schlicker, Julia Gray, Lisa Gray, Margaret (Ben) Kontney, Jackie (Zach) Nelson, Janelle Gray, Thomas Gray, and Mason Gray; and great-grandfather to Caroline Schlicker.

Pastor Gray served in active pastoral ministry for 48 years. After graduating from Concordia Theological Seminary In 1970 he served a South Dakota dual parish at Zion-Avon and St. John-Tyndall for five years. In 1975-1991 he served Missouri churches at Our Redeemer--Marshall and Peace-St. Louis. Then he returned to Michigan to serve at St. John-Pinconning and St. John-Rogers City (1991-2003.) After retiring to a home in Alpena, Michigan he was an interim pastor for periods of time at Holy Cross-Onaway, Trinity-Oscoda, and Immanuel- Ossineke. In his whole ministry, he was loved for his faithful care to those who were hospitalized or nearing death. He also used his unique gifts well in teaching confirmation classes, leading youth groups, and singing in various roles.

Barton will be remembered most for his bright smile, infectious laugh, and generous treatment of all types of people. He was also a gifted singer and brought joy to many in that role. His greatest enjoyments were found in spending time with his beloved family, particularly as the patriarch at annual full family gatherings in 2005 through 2024. A great sports fan, he loved playing and watching golf, and watching his Michigan Wolverines and Detroit Tigers. And he spoke in awe often at the scenery God created in his home state and across the whole country.
