Sandra (Sandy) Smith Buell passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, in O'Fallon, Missouri, at the age of 89. Born on May 6, 1936, in Kansas City, Missouri, she was the beloved daughter of Herbert Burling Smith Sr. and Miriam Hoag Smith of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Sandy was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Joseph Lawrence Buell III. She is survived by her loving brother, Sidney Smith, and sister-in-law, Eleanor Stephenson; her children, J. Lawrence Buell IV, Pearson Wells Buell, and Herbert Burling Buell; her cherished grandchildren, Joseph (Josh) Lawrence Buell V and Brynne Buell Cramer; her adored great-grandchildren, Calah Nicole Cramer and Lawrence Graham Cramer; her beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and god-children; as well as the countless friends whose impact on her life cannot be measured.
Sandy lived a life defined by curiosity, creativity, and compassion. A passionate birdwatcher, she traveled extensively across the globe—including all seven continents, even Antarctica—building an impressive life list of bird species she observed. Her love for flight extended beyond observation; she was a licensed pilot and proudly served in the Civil Air Patrol.
Her vibrant spirit also found expression through sports and the arts. Sandy enjoyed the challenge and camaraderie of tennis and golf, and found joy and peace in her garden. As a gifted artist, she explored multiple mediums including sculpture, painting, silk screening, needlepoint, and music, creating beautiful works that reflected her unique perspective and talents.
Animals held a special place in Sandy’s heart. From the horses she rode in her youth to the many beloved pets she cared for throughout her life, her deep affection for creatures great and small was ever-present. Her backyard feeders were always full, offering refuge and sustenance to the neighborhood birds she so loved.
Sandy’s legacy is one of adventure, creativity, and deep love for family, nature, and the world around her. She will be profoundly missed and warmly remembered by all who knew her.
